Question 2:
This selection is entitled "the socks" because these people have to live in certain attire and structer or else they will be arrested. The women are required to wear a veil every day reguardles the heat, no makeup what so ever, and have to act as if they aren't even there. "The socks" repersents how they have to live their lives. They are expected to live it sheltered, without any happiness, and if they are caught having fun, or sometimes even if they are talking, they will be arrested.

I think that the selection was entitled "The Socks" because that incident basically sums up the absurdity of the restrictions in this society. Satrapi got in trouble for having red socks. What is the difference between red socks and white socks? Nothing other than the color, but in this society individulaity and anything different was looked down upon. Something as simple as the color of her socks escalated into a problem. The importance of the socks in this story was to show how something so little that you would never even think of as a problem, was indeed a problem and led Satrapi to get into trouble. It shows how out of control the restrictions are. In the larger story, the socks as a whole represent how absurd the rules and restrictions are of this culture, and how they have no say in what they like or do.

In the story "the Socks" the women were fored to live under an extremly strict code. They were only allowed to do certain things and when they didn't follow the rules they were punished. The importance of the socks is to show that even a little bend in the rules will get you in trouble. For example when she wore the red socks she got in trouble with the committee. I think the socks represent how they have to live their lives under strict code. They don't have the freedom to do what they want and when they try, they get in trouble.

Question #1
The Revolutionary guards places many absurd restrictions on Satrapi and her peers. One restriction is to never be obscene and an example of that is at the beginning when Satrapi is obstructed from drawing nude models and is forced to draw models that are all covered up. They are also never allowed to look at another man other than their own. The woman are not allowed to reveal any parts of their body whatsoever, including their own derriere when running. All these restrictions drive Satrapi to a frenzy state of mine where she worries how she looks and if she is doing anything wrong rather than questioning her natural rights of life and liberty. Satrapi graphically represents the partying, her obscene derriere, and Satrapi and her friends being covered up. In writing, Satrapi declares her thoughts, her only outlet and freedom--that cannot be taken away. The rationale behind these restrictions are to make the people scared. Once the people are vulnerable and victimized emotionally, they won't rebel, only to be scarred of the consequences. They will feel opressed against and will be apprehensive to protest against their defiance. Satrapi and her friend claims that the guards feed off of the people's unhappiness. The guards want the people to obey under many restrictions so they can repress the people--even in the most sensless regulation.

The story is titled oscks for a reason. it is because he people had to live a certain way that they were told or else they would go to jail. They had rules that they had to follow in their everyday lives. The importance of the socks were to show how silly the rules were that they had to obide by.The socks represent the obsurdity of their society and rules they had to follow. This is how they had to live and it was absurd.

In Marjane Satrapi's "The Socks", everyone but mostly more the women were forced to live by ridiculous, cruel and degrading rules. The Revolutionary Guards established such bogus rules, they treated everyone like animals and not human beings. If the rules were broken, such harsh consequences were implied. Women couldn't have their wrists showing, have a walkman, laugh too loud or wear colored socks, otherwise they would be whipped or thrown in prison. I believe the socks represent how incriminating the rules are and the slightest, mess up of the rules, you were punished severly. Everyone has been stripped of their rights and freedoms, and rebeling was the only thing they could do, regardless if they would get in trouble.

I believe the section was entitled "The Socks" because it shows that the most little thing that most people overlook in life can get those that live in that culture in severe trouble. The women are treated to act as though they arent there, do as their told and never break the rules. The socks represent the strict life the women lead.

the selection is called "the socks" because of the short mention of her saying "I even remember spending an entire day at the committee because of a pair or red socks" not only was this emphasising the rediculous rules these people were forced to follow it was making a statement that they chose to rebel and live their lives the way that they wanted to. "The Socks" were just part number one in the rebellion that these people put up against the rules they were told they had to livce by.

the title is called socks because they are required to live in a strict structured society that is concerned with everything including socks. the importance of sock in this is the extent the government will go to control their people. it represents the amount of control the government has and how they treat their citizens.

2. I think that the selection entitled "Socks" because of the red socks that Satrapi got in trouble for wearing. This not only refers to the socks she is wearing but all of the things that she is not allowed to do. She also can not show any of her skin, not even her wrists. She can not wear any make up or show her hair. In the larger story the socks represent all of the things that she is resticted from doing, and how that basically is keeping her from living. She is not allowed to laugh, have a walkman, look at men, and pretty much not have a good time. The socks are just one of the many restrictions in her life that she talks about.

This story, in my opinion, was called "The Socks" because it showed all the hard blows the women had to take, to live what they considered a normal life. The writer also explained that, how people acted in public, isn't always how they act behind closed doors.
So the socks created a double life for the people in her country.

This selection is entitled sox because of an occurrence Satrapi had when she wore red sox and had to spend an entire day at the committee. The socks are a symbol, it is meant to show the extreme control the government wanted to force on Satrapi and her friends. It is to show what they were forced to conform to and what they did about it. The sox represent freedom, and a rebellion, because their government attempted to use fear as a means of restricting people from doing what they enjoyed. Their goal was to take away individual enjoyment and red sox were not allowed, they are a way of rebelling from the government which is the focus of the larger story.

I think this selection is entitled "Socks" because these women were required to be covered head to toe everyday. The socks represent how they were not allowed to show any skin, and how they had to struggle everyday for equality. I think that the fact these women held secret get togethers even though they were scared shows just how brave they are.

in the story, the citizens of the country are forced to live under strict laws that are sometimes absurd. They have to dress and act a certain way almost. The women could not wear makeup and had to wear their hair up instead of down. The women had to wear their gowns and wear a vail so that most of their face couldnt be seen. the country government had this approach to controlling their people because they do not want the citizens to have a mind of their own and rebel against the governtment but that is what is happening anyways.

Question 2:
This story is entitled "The Socks" because it shows the ridiculousness of the restrictions placed on the people of Iran. She tells of the incidents that she was scrutinized and penalized for. The remark the officer made when Satrapi was running late for her dentist appointment. When Satrapi was drawing her male model and was yelled at for making direct contact to the male model. These restrictions continued on to the point where even showing your wrist or laughing out loud would be considered an offence and arrested. The red socks Satrapi wore that day were not worn to cause a rebellion but merely because wearing an undergarment, like socks, was once considered normal. It portrays how the Iran military would try to erase all aspects of normality, like wearing socks into something was much bigger than that.

Question 2
I believe this selection is titled “The Socks” because of the way the women had to cover themselves to the fullest. This shows that women needed to represent themselves to be perfect and by wearing the coverings no one could tell them different. Although, in my opinion girls should be allow to express them by wearing what they want to wear. In the big picture, socks means that in this society there are many restrictions that people must follow. Restrictions some people don’t like to follow, therefore they break the law and do what they want. Overall, this story is a good example of society now that people don’t like to be told what they need to do therefore they break rules.

This selection is entitled "The Socks" because socks themselves are an analogy to the big shawls the women are required to wear: they both conceal what wants to be free. Feet don't want socks covering them. Socks make feet sweat and prevent them from the outside world. If it were up to the feet to decide, socks wouldn't exist. If it were up to the women to decide, they wouldn't have chosen to wear cloaks on their bodies to cover them. I believe that they may not have chosen to wear socks too because that would be another way to rebel against the rules.

The Revoltutionary Guard restricts Strapi and her peers from doing and wearing almost everything. In class they used to hav enude models now they could only draw someone covered from head to toe which isn't art and when she did draw a man they told her to look at the wall. She herself had to cover up and worry if evreything was its right length or color such as the red socks that showed. She graphically explains when the guards yells at her to stop running becuase her bum jiggled and explaine din wiriting that she didn't think it was wrong to have sex with someone she loved but most of her peers turned on her for her way of thinking. She believs that people should think and express they way they feel with out worrying they should be free to live.

In Satrapi's "The Socks" she points out all the restrictions that the Revolutionary Guard puts on everyone especially women. These restrictions vary from not being able to were make up and not being allowed to show any skin to just not being allowed to have fun. The Revolutionary guard wants to make sure that no one can have fun or enjoy pleasures because by doing this they have much greater power and control over their people. Satrapi"s argument against them is that it is completey inhumane to force these things and that she is going to do what she wants no matter the consequences.

I think that this selection was entitled "The Sox" because it represents the people being sheltered. They would have to keep on their coats and veils every day and they were not allowed to take them off or party. The society is so strict that everything they wear matters even down to what color socks they have on. One girl spent all day at the commitee for having red sox on.

This comic is entitled socks because of the absurd and restricting rules of the country, and the relevance it has to the author and other countries customs. This woman’s country is very strict in their woman’s presentation of herself and body. If her pants are not long enough, and her socks are showing, nevertheless her socks are a provocative or unnatural color; she is subject to be arrested. The rules are so restricting and brutal punishments are given for the slightest slip. The socks are a representation of the exaggeration between a woman and the rules of her country.

Response to Question 2:
This selection is entitled "The Socks" in order show the significance of the rules that the society had. In this society people of the opposite sex were not allowed to have class together, women had to be covered, couldn't wear make up, and couldn't laugh to loud. "The socks" are just one of the examples Satrapi gives when she is telling about the rules, she wore red socks one time and got in trouble. In the larger story "The Socks" represent the ridiculous rules of the society. It shows how stupid the rules were. How a pair of socks can cause such a problem, how the little things were so important and shouldn't have been.

Question 1:
The absurdities that Satrapi points out that the Revolutionary Guard places on her and her peers are almost limitless. They controlled what they wore, what subjects they spoke of, how they walked, what activities they took part in and how they thought.
Absurdities Satrapi explains in writing are being forced to wear certain things, when she was being scolded for her red socks. She also describes in writing how she was yelled at for walking a certain way because of the way her butt moved when she ran. When she wrote, "The Regime had understood that one person leaving her house while asking herself: Are my trousers long enough? Is my veil in place? Can my makeup be seen? Are they going to whip me? No longer asks herself:Where is my freedom of thought? Where is my freedom of speech? Mu life, is it livable? What's going on in the political prisons?" she was describing how they controlled what she and her peers thought.
Although Satrapi briefly described the restrictions the Regime placed on her relating to partying she mainly described that graphically.Throughout four pages she depicts the actions of drinking, dancing, dressing provocatively, and interacting with another gender being restricted and disapproved of.
The rationale behind these restrictions is to keep them on the "straight path." Satrapi's argument against the restrictions is that it limits their freedoms that were supposed to be garunteed to them.

Question 1:
I found it completely absurd what the restrictions consisted of that put on Satrapi and many others. The first that was introduced in the story was when she was looking at the man, while drawing him. I didn't understand how she got yelled at for such an action. She couldn't show any of her skin, and not even laugh loudly. Satrapi seemed to make most descriptive attention towards the drinking. She also strongly began to express her thoughts and feelings. The drinking scenes were stretched as one of the more important parts. Jessica Wood

This selections was entitled "The Socks" to represent just how ridiculous the conditions these women had to live in were. One women got in trouble for wearing a pair of red socks, and many others were punished for things that were just as crazy, such as showing skin or that they were wearing makeup. These rules are what were causing them to rebel. As a larger picture, it shows how restricted they were in their every day lives. With so many rules it was hard to live in such an absurd, demanding, cruel society.

This story was entitled "The Socks" because i believe the author wanted to show the audience the restictions the woman had to deal with in this society. The little things counted against the woman-like wearing red socks, or laughing too loud, or showing bear skin. Everything mattered, and if the woman were caught then they would be in trouble. Even though Satrapi got in trouble for wearing red socks it just shows how strict the enforcement was for the woman during this time.-Sara J

I feel this story was entitled "The Socks", because of the restictions they have in their homeland. She had gotten in trouble for wearing red socks one day, but the larger picture shows how much they put restrictions on the people of their country. i agree with what alexandra said "in this society individuality adn anything different was looked down apon." you can really see that in this story, like Satrapi definetly shows how much the people in her society are restricted and have boundries.

This selection was entitled "The Socks" because serves as a symbol that represents how many restrictions were put onto the community. It mattered the color of their socks which shows how strict life for them really was. The socks were important because it was a way for the writer to describe how rediculious the rules really were using such a simple example; such as, the color of her socks. In the larger story, the socks were symbols and reasons to why the teenagers felt they needed to live their own life in private. They did not let the influences of their strict community get to them because they did things they wanted to in order to have some fun.

The selection was titled "The Socks" because of the restrictions that their society puts on the people. One example is when Satrapi wears red socks. Individuality is frowned upon, and apparently by wearing red socks, she was trying to be individual. Maybe she didn't have any clean ones in a suitable color. There are so many restrictions of what they can and cannot wear, and do, and say. If the government has such a problem with the women, then they should just send them away to other countries and build robots that would do everything they were told. Seriously, this is ridiculous. The people in charge put so much restrictions on women that they worry too much about if they're breaking any rules, and too little about their rights. Their acts of rebellion are just what the country needs. The more people that rebel, the weaker the government will be, and eventually, everything will be equal. But, too many people are afraid. I am glad that Satrapi and her friends are doing what they can to live the lives that they want, even when it cost a friend his life, and they were arrested multiple times. It takes a lot of courage to stand up against a government like that.

I believe this story was titled "The Socks" because the women had to follow very strict rules, and one of the examples was not being allowed to wear red socks. The importance of the socks in this seclection is to show how stupid the rules they had to follow were. In the larger story the socks represent the absurd rules in their society.

The selection was entitled "The Socks" because the red socks symbolized how they were pretty much not able to be themselves with out being judged or getting in trouble. Since they were women they had to dress an certain and and it even seemed they had to act a certain way too. When the woman was caught with red socks it was such a big deal because she was not dressed the proper way. So the socks pretty much represented how little freedom the women had.

2. I believe this selection is entitled "The Socks"to represent the strict culture in which Satrapi lives. It is absurd to societies of the western world that something as simple as red socks were banned, in addition to many other things. Each culture has its own norm and to us the one in which Satrapi lives is too extreme. We are familiar with a free nation, where we may wear and do as we please. From a westerner's perspective, Satrapi's society is practically unreal. In this selection the socks represent self expression. Satrapi cannot wear these socks, something so simple yet so powerful to her. It was one of her only means to express her personality through fashion. The socks in the larger story represent freedom, and the gap between freedom in one society compared to another. Although in a western society socks are the bottom of the totem pole to fashion, in her eastern world they are just as important as the rest of her attire. she is expected to conform, or wear what is deemed appropriate for her. Being able to wear socks of her choice would mean the world to her. It would give her more of a sense of self identity. Inside she knows that not being able to wear what she chooses is wrong. She should have a right to do as she desires.

The story "the socks" is titled that because it is about how strict the rules were for women at the time. One women got into a lot of trouble because she wore red socks. "the socks," was just another rule to keep women down in society.

I think that this selection is entitled “The Socks” because the socks incident was a vivid memory for Satrapi. The sock memory was a smaller one, but it was also a good example of how controlling the law was getting. Socks are such a small detail on a person, and when there is such a big deal being made of a pair of socks just emphasizes how absurd the rules were becoming; and I think that was the point that Satrapi was trying to get across. In the larger story, the socks are representing how little control the general population has over themselves. What is theirs, and their choice, is no longer their choice.

Question 2

Socks are a small piece of clothing usually people would not get in trouble for, but the author was punished by the Revolutionary Guards if she wore the wrong color socks. The socks were just one example of all the restrictions that were placed on the women. Some of the other restrictions were running down the street, showing their wrists, laughing too loudly, wearing makeup or organizing parties. So I think “Socks” was chosen as the title because even though a restriction on socks is ridiculous, they are not the worst restriction that the women have.

Question 2:
I believe that the title “the socks” represents that woman had to follow every moral code no matter how trivial it was. In the story, woman would go to jail for disobeying the formal norms and the author used sox as an example of how ridiculous they were.

This piece of writing was entitled "The Socks" to represent the freedom that these woman did not have. When Satrapi wore the red socks she was punished. I feel as though she wanted to wear them to show how she was different and make a point. This piece of writing was entitled "The Socks" for an important reason. I feel as though it was meant to represent how Satrapi felt. She wanted to express herself and show that she was different by changing the color of her socks. She was punished for this. This story made me realize just how lucky we are as Americans. We never stop and think that there are people who don't have the freedom we do. I feel that Satrapi was trying to make a point with this story. She used "the socks" to represent the freedom she did not have.

The essay was titled "The Socks" because the women were set to a strict restrictions in their everyday life. They had to have every part of their bodies covered. They couldn't have parties and have fun unless they had a specific reason to. The guards didn't want them having fun so when they caught them doing so they threw them in jail.

Question #2:

I think that this selection is titled "The Socks" to represent how these women were treated. The women were told to wear a certain outfit that covers everything but their face. They are expected to not even look at men and it is against the law for them to wear anything but the "dress code," such as red socks. They can even get arrested for running. "The Socks" represents how they had to live their lives. These women are covered up and expected to basically not be noticed.

Question #1:

A restriction that the Revolutionary Guard places on the women that they can only show their faces and not wear makeup or even show their hair. The women are not allowed to drink alcohol, interact with men, and they can only listen to one type of music. In art class, the women are only allowed to draw people that are fully clothed, and because they can't look at men, they have to draw a woman that is fully covered. From every direction, she looked the same. The reason seems to be that having fear amoung the people is the "driving force behind all dictator's repression." Basically, to keep people under control. Strapi rebeled against the system because she realized what is was like being with people and having a good time. And she didn't want to be deprived of that right, and other rights.
